Fragile 2009

I won the first place in the NZGBA annual bead competition held at Annie Rose in Whangarei with my bead of Earth called Fragile. The theme for the competition was ‘translation – translate your world’. Each bead takes approximately 3 hours from start to finish. I made, broke and mangled 8 separate worlds before the final success. The bead is symbolic of the effects of global warming. The white dots symbolise the loss of ice sheets and the effects this will have on global currents. The world encapsulated in glass is indicative of the how fragile and intricate the symbiosis of life is, and we hold this in the palm of our hands. It’s time we became custodians in every aspect.
